Win streak halted by rival Petes

Oshawa, Ont., – With 51 seconds remaining in the third period, Team Canada gold medalist Brennan Othmann scored his second of the game to secure a 3-2 victory for the home Petes, snapping Oshawa’s three-game winning streak.

It was Oshawa who came out of the gates flying on Thursday night, scoring just their second shorthanded goal on the road all season, after Luke Torrance broke up a Peterborough pass, giving the Oshawa native a breakaway. Despite having his shot stopped, the trailer on the play, OA forward Ryan Gagnier, was able to finish the rebound for his 17th of the season. Gagnier’s 17th continues to lead the Gens.

In the second half of the opening frame, a stretch of more than six minutes without a whistle caught both teams struggling to find the right matchups. A tipped point shot from Brennan Othmann was enough to tie the game for the home side. The first period shots ended in favour of the Petes, 15-11.

The second period is where the age and experience of the Petes seemed to take over the play. Able to hem the Generals into their zone for much of the period, the Petes took the lead midway through the period. Tucker Robertson drove to the net with a nice play and beat Oster clean for the goal.

With almost all of the possession, the Petes extended their shot lead to 26-18 after 40 minutes.

Oshawa wouldn’t go away easily, as just 47 seconds into the final frame, NHL prospect Calum Ritchie would float his 15th goal of the season through a crowd and past Petes’ goalie Michael Simpson. Both teams came close to finding a lead throughout the third period, but both Simpson and Oster held their ground and it looked like the game was going to overtime.

As mentioned, Othmann scored his second of the game, and 16th of the season with only 51 seconds remaining to secure the win. Gens netminder Oster stopped 35/38 shots faced in just his second game with the Generals.

Next up for the Gens is another East Division rival in the Kingston Frontenacs tomorrow night from the Leon’s Centre.
