2023 Orientation Camp: Day 2 Scrimmage scoring recap

Anna Twohey

Oshawa, Ont., – On the second day of the Oshawa Generals 2023 Orientation Camp, both team Red and White returned to the ice for the second and final on-ice scrimmage of the weekend. On day one, team White came out victorious with a 7-4 win over team Red.

Cole Scullion earned the start for team White, while Hayden Sabourin made his second appearance in net for team Red.

It took almost ten minutes of play, but team White would finally open the scoring off the stick of Ed Downey. Downey scored in last night’s scrimmage as well. Team Red’s first real chance came on a 2-on-1 opportunity but was broken up by a nice defensive play by team White’s Nicholas Wlodarczyk. Wlodarczyk is taking part this weekend on a free-agent invitation.

Team White quickly doubled their lead when Shawn Costello finished off a rebound off a shot from returning defenceman Lucas Rodriguez. Costello was the Generals 5th round selection at the recent April priority selection. The second time around, Rodriguez made no mistake, rifling home the first of his camp, beating Sabourin under the shoulder to extend team White’s lead to 3-0. Last season, Rodriguez joined the Generals in the later stages of the season while the team battled through injuries on its blue line.

The first period comes to a close with team White in front 3-0.

2022 fourth-round pick Ethan Toms got team Red on the board early in the 2nd period. Toms hit the twine eight times with the Pickering Panthers last season. Toms’ number one mission will be to join the Generals full-time and will be looked upon to take big steps in his development ahead of the 2023-2024 season. With the momentum beginning to shift toward team Red’s favour, Cole Scullion continued to stand tall in his net. Scullion was selected in the 2nd round of the 2023 U18 priority selection.

Team Red managed to get within one with just 14:51 remaining on the clock Jonathan Pylypuik snapped a wrister home from the slot. The free agent invite scored 13 goals with the Nashville Jr. Predators in the 2022-2023 season. 2023 first-rounder Owen Griffin tied the game for team Red on a penalty shot – deking out Scullion with a flawless no-move shot, trickling over the line.

Griffin gave team Red their first lead of the afternoon with just 5:09 left on the clock. His second goal on Sunday also marks his third of the weekend. The second period bounce-back from Owen Griffin and team Red was enough to get them the win in the second and final scrimmage of camp, taking it 4-3 over team White.
