Friday, January 5th, 2018: Oshawa Generals vs. Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds

Tonight, the Oshawa Generals put their 6-game win streak up against the league-leading Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds in their second meeting of the season. The two teams first met in the Greyhounds home opener at the beginning of the season where the Gens handed the Soo their first of three regulation losses this season. Nico Gross returned to the lineup after serving as an assistant captain for Team Switzerland at the 2018 World Junior Championship.

1st Period:

Although both teams played extended hockey games last night there was a frantic pace to start the game. The first shot of the game was not registered until two minutes into the period when Domenico Commisso and Nico Gross would break in on a 2-on-0 that would just fall short. However, Commisso would redeem himself when he buried a shot on another breakaway opportunity to make it 1-0. The Gens continued to put the pressure on the Greyhounds defence as they tested Villalta early and often trying to break open the game. Commisso was very noticeable in the first, generating a lot of chances with his speed, even setting up Harrogate for a great chance that was ultimately robbed by Villalta. Although the Gennies dominated the play throughout the first, the Greyhounds had a couple quality chances in the final minute but Keyser came up huge making a wicked pad save to maintain the 1-0 lead heading into the second period. Oshawa also led in shots 11-7.

2nd Period:

The Greyhounds picked up where they left off at the end of the first putting Keyser to work as they searched for the equalizer. Up to the challenge, Keyser made a number of great saves, even taking one off the mask. Momentum then flowed in the Generals direction as they found sustained pressure in the offensive zone where the line of Studnicka, Noel, and Krastenbergs created a handful of solid chances. There was quite a bit of back and forth action throughout the second and Keyser was locked in stopping everything that came his way. Studnicka and Krastenbergs nearly extended the lead when they combined for two glorious chances after they turned the puck over but at the end of a long shift Villalta would get the better of them. At 1:28 of the period, the Greyhounds tallied a short-handed goal to tie the game 1-1. That is where it would stand heading into the third period with Oshawa holding the edge in shots 24-18.

3rd Period:

Feeling the momentum start to shift in favour of the Soo, the Gens were forced to play some defence early in the third. Then at 16:50 of the period the Greyhounds scored to take their first lead of the game, 2-1. Making his presence felt in his return to the lineup, Nico Gross fired home his 4th goal of the season to tie game 2-2. The PK unit was tested late in the period where they did well to get in the passing and shooting lanes to allow Keyser to make several key saves, including a booming pad save. For the second straight game, both teams would play for the extra point as the home crowd was treated to some overtime action. Early in the overtime period, the Greyhounds would head to the man advantage where they would eventually capitalize to win the game by a final of 3-2. Finals shots were Oshawa 30 Sault Ste. Marie 30.

After a busy week of action, the Generals will have a much needed day off before they take on the Owen Sound Attack for the final time this season on Sunday, January 7th at 2:05 pm.
