January 28th, 2016
The Oshawa Generals are excited to announce that Anthony Cirelli is the new captain of the Generals. Cirelli is in his second year with the Generals registering 12 goals and 23 assists for 35 points in 41 games.
Cirelli, the Woodbridge Ontario native, was a walk-on free agent last year coming from the Mississauga Reps organization. Cirelli made the 2014-2015 Oshawa Generals out of training camp. Known for his strong work ethic and good defensive play, Cirelli’s top highlights include scoring the tying and championship-winning goal in overtime against the Kelowna Rockets to win the 2015 Memorial Cup.
The Tampa Bay Lighting selected Anthony Cirelli in the third round, 72nd overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He is expected to bring strong leadership to this young Oshawa Generals Team. “I am honored to be the captain of this team, I am going to go out and be a leader for the young guys and the entire team,” says Oshawa Generals Captain Anthony Cirelli.
“As an organization, we have been waiting for someone to emerge, and we feel as a staff that Anthony Cirelli exemplifies what the Generals are all about,” says Bob Jones Head Coach of the Oshawa Generals. “He is an extremely hard worker and leads this team on and off the ice, we are excited to have Cirelli as the captain of the Oshawa Generals”.
Along with Anthony Cirelli, Joe Manchureck, Mitchell Vande Sompel, and newly appointed assistant captain Riley Stillman will round out the leadership group. “These four young men have emerged after the departure of some of our veteran players as our leadership group,” says Vice President and General Manger Roger Hunt. “Being the captain of the Oshawa Generals has a lot of honor and responsibility tied to it, we know that Anthony will represent the Generals well.”
The Generals next game is Friday, January the 29th against the Barrie Colts at 7:35 pm.
